The Many Black History Books Available

By Charlotte McBride

Black history books can be found at each and every bookstore around America. These are stories that not only inform but inspire children of color to respect their heritage. They also help to teach other races about the horrors that African Americans went through many years ago. For a better understanding about these people it is essential that people read the following novels.

"The Autobiography of Malcolm X" is one story that anyone would enjoy reading. This tells the story of a man who fought for the rights of his people and how many others tried to stop his freedom fights. He was a man who appeared to be very angry at times during the 1960's when African Americans were being treated very poorly by white people.

"The Help" is a great story that chronicles the life of a twenty one year old white woman who was friends with her maid. There is another black woman who is also involved in the novel and she is someone who is bold and usually speaks her mind to others. The three women have a unique friendship that goes further than that of employer and domestic. In some regards the black woman was almost like a mother to the younger white woman.

The great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Had a lifetime of struggles in American society. He led many marches on the streets in the south since they were still treating people of color unfairly. Some of his supporters usually came from northern states who did not agree with southern whites. All of these facts can be found in "Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr."

He was a very brave person who helped to orchestrate many demonstrations that were very peaceful. Dr. King advised people of color to avoid the bus services in Alabama when an African American woman was arrested for refusing to give up her seat. This led to a very long and controversial boycott.

Harriet Beecher Stowe struck gold when she wrote the very famous "Uncle Tom's Cabin". This is a very inspirational and classic story that dealt with heated controversy during its time. Even though many people argue over the anti-slavery sentiments of this story it is still regarded as one of the most captivating stories of our time.

A shy little girl named Ruby Bridges made history when she became the first African American student to attend an all white school. Her story can be read in "The Ruby Bridges Story". This was one tough little lady who faced bullies and racism each and everyday while going to this school. It is a great novel to read since it confronts people about unnecessary hatred.

One of the greatest black history books ever written has to be "Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom." This is the story of one brave woman who was born into slavery and eventually led herself and others to freedom. She is compared to the famous biblical figure because of her bravery and fight against all that is evil. This was a woman who paid her debts to society and she should always be remembered as someone who helped to change the world.
