Create a Solid Foundation for Your Writing

By Ron Wilson

The first thing to consider when writing your story is to start strong. Your first chapter, page, sentence, has to be fantastic. It has to reel your audience in and convince them to continue reading your story.

If you don't start strongly, you will struggle to maintain the interest of a reader, and they will be wondering what the rest of the story holds, if they are presented with a week beginning. First impressions last, and this is more true than ever when a reader picks up a book.

As the story progresses you need to allow your imagination free rein. You must be open to new possibilities and also open to change. The structure or outline of your story is not set in stone, and if you feel something needs to change, don't be afraid to change it. The structure acts as a guide to keep the writing on track, but is malleable at the same time.

Once your structure or outline is in place, it makes the rest of the writing process easier. It even gives you more freedom to unleash your creative imagination. Because you know what is going to happen, and how and when it will happen, you are able to play around and experiment with the details to a greater degree, and this makes for a deeper written narrative.

Be happy about using a structured framework. Don't feel that it is restrictive or holding you back, because as we have said you can change it as you go along, and it serves as a guideline to get your story onto the page, step by step.

Beginning writers often need to follow this step by step process to boost their confidence and break down the huge task of writing a novel, into manageable pieces of writing.
