Read Books About Life After Death

By Charlotte McBride

Many people want to know what happens when we die. That is an age old question that humans have pondered since they first became conscious, and possibly even before. Reading books about life after death can help to give perspective and understanding to the human search for meaning.

Each major religion in the world offers some type of theory about what happens in the afterlife. This question is pondered by different philosophies, theologies and sciences too. There is quite a lot of crossover and overlap between these different schools of pursuit of truth as the members of the human race try to seek out the answers to these important questions about our existence in the human condition.

The preponderance of the world's most prominent Asian religions, often known as the eastern school of thought, hold what is known as a non-dualistic view of the world and the cosmos. These different belief structures hold in common that god does not exist as in the western sense, as in a separate individual, apart from the rest of existence and creation. Those religions teach that humans, and that all creation, are parts of the same gigantic cosmic ocean of energy and light. They teach that when humans and animals die, they simply cease to exist. They cease to have experiences and are just snuffed out like a candle.

Other Asian religions include groups like the Hindus and the taoists. They also share the belief in non-dualism, but there are slight differences. Hindus, for example, believe in many avatars for some of their gods.

The Abrahamic religions include Islam, Judaism and Christianity and they posit that there is one God. They profess that this one God is a separate being, apart and different from each human soul. After death, the soul goes to live in some type of heaven or pleasant afterlife.

Besides eastern and western though, there are other religions based in nature. Native Americans and Africans believe that nature should be worshipped, or respected, and that humans are not independent of it, but they are part of it. Those faiths teach that the ultimate goal of human existence should be to unite with the cosmos and nature.

In addition to religions, the sciences have all tried to explain this existential dilemma. Cosmology, physics and quantum mechanics are all scratching at the root of what fundamentally happens to the soul when the body no longer exists. They also are trying to find out if there even is a soul at all.

Books about life after death are a great way for people to explore life's deepest mystery. The wisdom that has been passed down through the ages by the wisest people who have spent their lives studying these questions is available easily. A reader can have many questions answered, but can also be assured that many more will probably arise.
