Steps To Getting Ready To Write Your Novel

By Doris Madden

You may be like a lot of people and have a lifelong dream to write your novel. You have a special story is just waiting to be told. Getting started may be difficult for you, however. Procrastination can hold you back, but fear of failure is also a deterrent. Following a few simple suggestions can help overcome these hindrances.

You need to determine what message you want you story to have. Good stories all have a moral of some sort, something the author is trying to say. It may be one of the old cliches about love conquering all, or about your sins being found out. There is a limited number of messages. Make sure everything you include in the plot helps portray that idea.

Plotting is am important part of writing a good story. Plotting is the action that occurs in the story, not what it is about. A plot outline detailing the highs and lows and the forward progression is important. When there is a moment of intensity, it should be followed with a period of slower action to prevent overwhelming the reader with intensely stressful moments.

A novel is usually written much as a three act play is done. The first act is about one-fourth of the length, the second act about one-half the length, and the third act another one-fourth. This means that most of the action is in the second act. A lot of writers like to outline this part at least, even if they are not an one who writes by an outline.

Another important part of a story is the setting. This doesn't mean just the location, but also the time it takes place. Seek for authenticity in setting. The location doesn't have to be a real one, but combine elements of a couple of locations into the one your have planned to make it seem authentic. If you are doing a fantasy story, requiring a fantasy world, make it believable at least.

Characterization is one of the most important things about a good story, along with plot. The protagonist, the main character, needs to be likable, but not all good. Write in a weakness so they will be more believable. The antagonist is the character in opposition to the protagonist. However, don't make them all bad so they will be more realistic.

You have to sit down and just write for the story to get done. Thinking about it and not taking action worn't work. Decide on a schedule and commit to it. If a daily session is not possible for you, set aside a regular time at least. Daily is best if possible. Some authors strive for a certain number of words or pages instead of a certain amount of time. Be consistent with whatever you choose to commit to.

When you write your novel, the goal is to just get the words written down at first. You will revise and edit afterwards. To have something to revise, you must at least get it on paper. It won't be perfect, but something you will work on after it is written.
