Different Styles of Writing

By Ronald F Wilson

An individual writing style is the manner where you exhibit yourself. It develops gradually with practice, and is a result of your personal choices and individuality. Here are a few things you may do to develop your writing style organically.

The first thing is to practice daily. There is no way to substitute this. You need to take the time to try different writing styles and experiment with techniques. The more you write, the easier it will become to identify your own unique style.

Next, you must be clear and precise. By using the correct choice of nouns and verbs you are able to provide details which bring your writing to life. The more detail you provide, the more chance you have of transferring the details of your imagination to that of the reader.

Following that you can is to use your natural voice. Just like we do when speaking, we have our own unique way of communicating. Your writing should progress naturally, and have an identifiable 'tone'.

Following that is to read, read, read. The more you read the more you will unconsciously absorb the best ways to write with complete confidence. You will learn the best ways to inject individual technique by watching established authors.

Lastly, you will need to pay attention to your choice of words. As you speak differently to different people, you must also write differently depending on your audience. Think about the way your patterns of speech change when you are speaking to your boss, as opposed to your spouse or your child. Writing needs to change too depending on the purpose of the piece.

Keeping this in mind, you may like to experiment with a variety of styles until you discover your own unique style or voice that you will be comfortable using every time you write.
