What Conservative Judaism Gay Perspectives Have To Say

By Claudine Hodges

Homosexuality is one issue that is faced by lots of persons nowadays. Discrimination is suffered by lots of gays and lesbians from the societies they live in, and even their families. Their sexual orientations are not typically disclosed to others as they have fears of what could be said or done to them by others.

Their own stances regarding homosexuality have already been provided by lots of religions. Several things have been said by conservative Judaism gay perspectives about this issue. These following statements are several only of their own beliefs.

Some people are possessing traditional insights on the topics which individuals are facing today, like homosexuality. With this, they are considering this topic as an abomination. Generally, they dislike gay people. They also are praying that their sons will not be one of them. If ever their sons turn out to be homosexuals, they, especially the fathers, are usually disowning them.

However, others will also say that these individuals should be understood more as they have struggled to look for their real identities. They will say that respect is deserved by these persons, too. Respect is needed by individuals so that peaceful communities can be lived in. Acceptance is a value, as well, that should be practiced by all members.

The Torah is the Jewish counterpart of the Bible of Christians. The Torah is containing all things which people should be doing in their own lifetimes. The Torah is prohibiting the acts which are associated with homosexuality. It is not devaluing those homosexuals, however. It is maintaining the fact that all gays are humans, as well, who have feelings and also emotions. It is certainly not their fault if they find people belonging to the similar gender attractive.

There are people who harass gays and embarrass them in public. They make rude comments and jokes that hurt the feelings of homosexuals. Several queers typically attempt suicide so that they can avoid these hurtful situations. With these in mind, the Torah prohibits harassment on these people as harassment opposes the values that Judaism teaches to its followers.

Some individuals believed that homosexuality is one type of disease that could be cured by doctors such as psychiatrists and psychologists. Therapies are usually conducted to gays by lots of practitioners hoping that these persons could be turned into someone they must be. However, the right of these homosexuals for therapies considered as dangerous and useless to be rejected is affirmed by Judaism.

Those who belong to the opposite sex are being wed by some queers thinking that their orientations will change. However, those with a homosexual orientation are not encouraged by Jewish views to wed individuals of the opposite sex. If such is done, several negative situations can be expected, such as tragedy, unrequited love, shame, dishonesty, and ruined lives.

The views of Jewish rabbis are concluding that all the Jews are made equal, what their orientation, wealth, or genders are. They are also advising queers of becoming true to themselves. They are also reminding them, however, of following the Torah and abstaining from homosexual activities as much as possible.
