Why People Read Contemporary Cowboy Romance Novels

By Beryl Dalton

People around the world like to see a good story unfold. In some cases, readers enjoy the tension, drama and excitement that sometimes results when two characters in a story figure out that they may be right for each other. The conflict that keeps bibliophiles guessing until the final climax has kept several writers paid and happy. Contemporary cowboy romance novels deliver all the positives of these stories.

In essence, whether or not a story of this nature contains erotic elements, it has to engage each reader with the increasing mental and emotional attraction between hero and heroine. Stories that lack any trace of such passion or have poorly written descriptions of that pull between the characters, usually do not become popular.

There is nothing quite like reading a well written description about a sexy man. Authors who have done well in this area are good at putting together characteristics that readers respond to. Western stories are set against a backdrop of a difficult and rugged life. The men who are a major part of any story must be able to face their environment and overcome it. They are attractive and possess inner qualities like strength and determination.

Many people who are fans of this genre like to take a virtual trip to another place. They do that through the words which are written in these books. The vivid descriptions made available through the author capture their imagination. They can use their mind to picture rolling hills, beautiful meadows and high mountains against a gorgeous sky.

Readers want to know what regular life is like outside of their own community. Reading about the Western lifestyle gives them a break from the routine of their own habits. It also allows them to vicariously experience things that they would not do on a regular basis. For example, they can imagine themselves riding horses instead of bikes.

Although contemporary romances are based in the West, heroines found within the pages struggle with the situations that modern women and men face. Problems faced by men and women nowadays, such as figuring out how to claim insurance after an accident, add conflict. This is why some fans gravitate towards the texts. It makes identifying with them easier than relating to a school teacher or grocer who worked and loved under different conditions.

In addition to the usual drama, tough leather boots and men in tight jeans that are expected in these stories, there are several elements that allow readers to separate them into other categories. For example, there are several that have Christian or other religious themes. In these, the characters grow in qualities like faithfulness even as they explore their love for each other.

While cowboys are generally associated with Texas, several stories are set in other parts of the United States. For example, some may be written with Colorado as the base, while others take place in areas like Montana. There may also be fans who like the novels which occur in Canada and allow them to enjoy that landscape.
