Writing Your Materials In A Humorous Manner

By Alton James

If you are interested in a career as a comedic writer, you should follow tips you find on sites that actually teach how to write funny. Better yet, attend writing classes that focus on comedic writing. Consider famous authors who try to add a bit of funniness in their books just to keep the readers interest level high. Therefore, following are some suggestions that will help you write interesting and funny articles to ensure that your readers end the reading experience on a happy note.

Misdirect your readers by using absurdity in your writing. Illogicality of thoughts is what keeps us laughing and misleading your readers using this technique is what will keep them reading and asking for more. You see, when logic is interspersed with a silly idea, even without images to support the material, the reader can still use his or her imagination to come up with the ridiculous idea on his mind. For instance, an elevator opening up to show a desert are two unconnected thoughts but can be clearly imagined by the reader.

Build up the situation instead of keeping the whole story at the same level of absurdity. This technique is all about intensification of a situation wherein you start your funny story in a very relaxed manner and slowly introducing illogical ideas and building to an extremely absurd climax. Although absurdity of thoughts can be funny, the more appropriate approach is to start serious and then intensify the situation.

Repeat ideas or lines within the same joke. The basis of comedy is the act of repeating scenarios or jokes several times. Look at sitcom The Three Stooges and how they act and react to situations. When one does something, the next stooge does the same thing. And despite the many times actions are repeated, those who view the comedy still find the scenes appealing to their senses.

Mix serious and absurd in one story material. This is a tricky method of presenting a funny story because you have to maximize the use of reversals in the story. For instance, exaggerating a funny situation and applying morbid solutions to an otherwise simple matter makes the scene funnier. If acted out by good actors who can portray the roles well, then the more the scene becomes funny. The same thing is true when simple solutions are applied to otherwise difficult situations, the lameness and simplicity of the solution is what makes the scene funny. Think about Mr. Bean and his solutions to problems.

Try the Circular technique. This is very much a self-explanatory technique that is very much related to Repetition technique. Likewise, this technique allows the user to repeat things again and again.
