Self Tanning Spray: A Safe Substitute

By Haywood Hunter

A safe way to tan without excessive sun exposure is to use a self tanning spray. This eliminates the risk of skin cancer that is related to the sun. The first self tanning products first came out in the 1960s, since then they have been improved, producing a much more realistic looking tan.

Overuse of self tanning spray can produce a tan that is more orange than the sun-kissed glow usually associated with tanning. When these products were first introduced, an orange glow was the norm, however, they have changed a lot since then. If used in the proper manner, self tanning spray creates a beautiful tan look without the associated UV exposure.

Self tanning spray contains a chemical called DHA, which is created from a colorless sugar known as glycerin. This chemical interacts with the dead skin cells on the top layer of skin on the body, producing the color change that simulates a tan. A self tanning spray must be continually used, however, because the dead skin cells do flake off from the body, causing the tan to fade. Most fake tans will last about a week without maintenance.

A self tanning spray is one of the most effective ways to apply a sunless tanning product. Lotions can be hard to spread evenly on the skin. However, a self tanning spray allows for equal distribution of the product, helping to keep the tan from looking spotty or patchy.

To get the most even look possible, exfoliation should take place before applying a self tanning spray, either with a scrub or a loofah. Care should be taken not to get the product on sensitive areas, such as lips or eyes. Also, apply the self tanning spray sparingly to elbows and knees, these usually have more dead cells and will appear darker if a light touch is not used.

Sunscreen should still be used when venturing out in to the sun, as self tanning spray does not contain any sunscreen. Self tanning spray can produce a realistic looking tan without sun exposure that looks great and lasts for several days.
