Screenwriting Tips

By Amanda Kirby

Young writers who want to see their work produced practice the art of screenwriting. All the TV shows, plays and movies that we see all begin from this stage. Entering this career is tough and you would need to work really hard to succeed. Make it a point to cultivate many and varied contacts. The more people you know, the greater the chance that your work will be discovered by some interested parties.

As a screenwriter one of the tools you should have is a screenwriting software program. It takes care of the formatting of your work, this way it will look professional when you print it out. You won't be able to get anyone to read your material if is difficult to follow along on the pages. Screenwriting software programs are quite easy to obtain, there are quite a lot to choose from. It should be simple enough to navigate but still offer you all the features you need to look professional.

You might be a new writer, but that's no excuse to hide your work. All it takes is for your work to land on the right hands and you'd be set to go. Be ready for some criticism though as this is common in this line of work. Don't be afraid to express your true self in your work. Don't let the current media craze affect you, don't be so ready to jump in the bandwagon. This will only affect your work and make it seem as if you're copying from the work of others. Try to be creative and bring something new and refreshing into the spotlight.

Your screenplay should contain all the necessary elements in a good story. The three important elements of a good screenplay are introduction, climax and ending; make sure you give proper attention to all these elements. Your characters should come out alive, so real that the reader would think that they're real people. Use enough details to make the scenes stand out, enough so as to keep the reader's attention and make them think like they're in the same room. Keep your readers entertained - and guessing, throw in some interesting twists in the story. The better you are at making your stories unpredictable, the more the readers will be hooked on the story.

Being a screenwriter is tough, you would have to continually encourage yourself to continue onto this path. It wouldn't be easy to make it in this business. The work can be long and the opportunities can be far between. But if this is your dream, then nothing should stop you until your reach the top.
