Horror & 3 Creative Writing Tips For Students

By Katie Arden

I believe that, in the back of everyone's mind, there's a certain desire for fear. In some way or another, we enjoy being scared and it's fortunate that there are various types of media designed for this purpose. However, it's easy to say that not a single one of them would have been able to come into fruition without creative writing. To say that this is a worthwhile venture would be an understatement and here are 3 tips designed to help writers along.

One of the first points to mention is that characters have to be written well. This is especially true for protagonists, since these are the men and women who writers must be able to construct with a certain level of quality in mind. When I find myself drifting through a story without any kind of care, as it relates to the story, I know that the story itself has not been constructed well. One of the first ways for interest to rise, as it relates to creative writing, is through a firm understanding of social behavior.

When it comes to your surroundings, you must use some of the best descriptions imaginable. Creative writing entails this as well, which means that you must be able to tell the readers where they are. For example, most horror movies have their highest points in condensed environments which do not seem to possess many places to escape. It's one of the greatest focal points for writers to hone in one, since their creativity will be expanded through this.

Most importantly, when it comes to writing horror, take your time. Focus on dragging out the details just long enough for readers to stay with them. Do you know that moment in a horror film when it seems like a character is approaching their demise and yet it takes quite a while for it to happen? This is the element of horror doing its job in the right way. You want to make sure that these moments linger, since they only help to make the payoff that much more effective.

As stated earlier, many of us enjoy horror-themed media because of how it is able to scare us. We enjoy the thrill that comes from this type of media, so it's not unlikely that we will continue to focus on it for the future. In order for creative writers to perfect their craft, though, certain methods have to be taken up. The talking points mentioned above are just a few, which means that more help can be attained with the right amount of research.
