A Brief Look At New Age Philosophies

By Andrea Davidson

A person can only understand new age philosophies through knowing the roots of contemporary cosmic humanist movements. It is the romantic poets of the 19th century like Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson who rejected teaching of the bible and God. They instead wrote lengthy explanations on inspiring spirituality that can only be experienced by personal introspection.

It was not until the 1960s that these ideas started attracting audiences. This was made possible by movie stars, popular recording artists and eastern gurus who began publicizing their New Age ideas across the world. In recent times, popular recording artistes like Madonna have identified themselves with Hinduism; with other well-known personalities like Phil Jackson have openly embraced Zen Buddhism. Others like John Travolta and Tom Cruise have expressed their belief in scientology.

This has led to the dissemination of cosmic humanist ideas through sales of books, films and films. Naturalistic and materialistic philosophies are not recognized by the New Age philosophy as the explanations they offer do not accept the omnipresent supernatural. If the perspective they view from is right and assuming human existence aspects are sacred, then in this world everything has a spiritual nature.

If lifes spiritual aspects lead to inner truth and higher consciousness, then human beings should view all reality from a supernatural angle. It is this perspective that directs Cosmic humanists to a non-naturalism philosophy, meaning that everything is supernatural and nothing is natural. Cosmic humanisms philosophy opinion is that ultimate real life exists in the spiritual angle.

Cosmic humanists believe that entire reality is all about God, ranging from a the tiniest drop of sea water to all planets in the universe. This belief is supported by one of their philosophies that focuses on principles widely used, which views the earth together with the entire universe as an organism with life.

Like the philosophy of non-naturalism, new age philosophies affect their ontology as well as its epistemology. Based on the theory of knowledge, fans of new age movement emphasize on the importance of people connecting with higher selves. Humans can definitely know unlimited truth instinctively by forming a bond with the God-force in them.

When people look within, they will find the truth but not in a way that is commonly understood. According to cosmic humans, the truth, which is made up of what one can know, is an experience or a feeling. The meaning of life is not contained in knowledge. Each person creates his or her truth in accordance to a principle that states if it feels like the truth to someone, it probably is. All the knowledge is in the God-force within people, and if they connect with that power, they tap into knowledge.

The ontology of the supporters of cosmic humanism branches a certain philosophy that is not naturalistic. The ultimate reality or substance is in the hands of Christ consciousness or God-force. God happens to be the core of existence, with all living things revolving around him. So many of the new age philosophies are monistic, the likes of Marxism, Leninism and secular-based humanism.
