3 Reasons Why Creative Writing Classes Matter

By Katie Arden

College is one of the broadest experiences imaginable, especially when it comes to classes. With this in mind, I would like to draw attention to creative writing and what it can bring to the table. To say that this is strong would be an understatement, but there are many students who may be unfamiliar with what said classes can offer them. To better understand what these are all about, here are 3 reasons why it's in your best interest to get involved in creative writing classes in college.

To start off, creative writing classes help you to write in a number of ways. It's easy to say that this class will help you write short stories but there are so many other forms to consider as well. Even if you may not be a fan of poetry, classes like these may help you to not only learn about it but allow you to gain a stronger appreciation of poetry as a whole. What this means is that your knowledge of various writing styles will grow in due time.

If you want to talk about another benefit of creative writing class, it's important to note criticism. Not every creative writer is going to be perfect, especially after years and years of experience, meaning that it's important for them to know what can be done better. How, exactly, can you write your next piece so that previous errors stand a greater chance of being cleared? Once these mistakes are noted, it's easier for stronger pieces to be created in the future.

Along with the aforementioned idea of criticism, though, comes the idea that creative writing can create self-confidence. Even though your writing may require work in certain areas, this doesn't mean that potential is nonexistent. In fact, one's passion for writing is often showcased through the material, regardless of how many mistakes there are. Writers should know what their strengths are, and this type of class can help to create this level of understanding.

Isn't it obvious why so many people decide to take up creative writing courses during their time in college? Some may see these classes as learning experience, in and of themselves, which allows them to absorb information they probably couldn't obtain somewhere else. It's also worth noting that many these classes as ways to unwind from the more demanding courses in college. Simply put, there are more than a few reasons why creative writing stands out.
