The Best Way to Choose a Great Essay Topic

By Sarah Elise

In the college classrooms of today, teachers are more willing than ever before to let students choose their own topics for essays. In the past, students typically had to write about the same subject. Teachers did not allow for much creativity in this area. The growing popularity of the Internet has played a major role in this paradigm shift, due to the fact that papers can now be placed online quickly for the world to see. This growing trend has forced teachers to be more creative in their assignments. In turn, students are now being asked to be more creative in their work as well.

At times, writing a great college essay can be challenging for even the most experienced writers. Below are a few great ideas to help you getting started writing an essay that will please your instructor and help you make the grade. Don't forget, your essay will say a lot about who you are. This is something that should be kept in mind when choosing a topic. From an early age students are taught the first step in writing a great essay is brainstorming. However, many students don't know what to brainstorm about. Below are some of the best topics to choose from:

Talk about your own personal values. Consider what items you hold the dearest. Take an inventory of who you are, and the thing that makes you special. This could be friends or family. It might be a special talent. You may even want to think about utilizing a controversial topic including religion because it can be looked at from a number of perspectives. For example, you can speak about the Catholic Church and recent scandals or perhaps the history of world religion. Both could be superb topics, supplying you with a great deal of material to discuss.

Think of your true passions in life. Are you currently an excellent skier? Do you like to cook? Did you get named best dressed in your school? These are just a few suggestions for discovering a wonderful topic. You can create an essay that discusses your favorite movies, teaches someone a sport, or instructs them on the way to prepare a mouthwatering meal for two.

Let the reader get to know the real you. A story of personal struggles such as divorce, lack of confidence or overcoming something makes for a fantastic essay. Most teachers get tired of reading the same recycled topics, be original! If you want a good grade from your teacher it is important that you stand out from your classmates. Write an essay that will make the reader remember you.

Don't be scared of controversy. Using top-news stories is a superb approach to develop hot topics that folks have an interest in. It's a lot easier to write an essay whenever a large amount of information is available. This will minimize your research time as well. These topics can also excite, enrage, please, or fire up a lot of other emotions for the reader. In any event, this is a great thing. Skim the news for stories which are making a buzz, and after that center your essay on one of these hot stories.

Entertain people. Professors read boring papers on a daily basis. Put some personality to your essay.. Maybe employ a little humor; your professor will appreciate it. If you are not a class clown, don't fret. It's not hard to help make your readers smile without knocking them from their chair. Use descriptive writing to paint a picture for your readers. Bring them off to an exciting new place or on a journey.

Brainstorming is a great way to get started on a college essay. Simply take a seat and write whatever pops into their heads. It's OK to jot and doodle. Just let the ideas come out. This technique should get those literary juices flowing. Be sure to read your professors instructions thoroughly and remain inside the guidelines.
