By Cherry Mercer

Perhaps every starting writer ultimately dreams to publish a story of their own that is appealing to the audience. However, this may not be easy to achieve given the wide diversity of readers. Their personalities differ invariably so are their interests. Let alone the close competition among writers. Nonetheless, writing captivating books is possible. Honing the right skills can help you keep up with the other authors.

The key to captivate your audience relies on your style of writing. Show them what the picture is like. Do not just narrate. Instead of relaying the main character's delight, it is best to reveal his pleasure by describing the details. Similar to painting, the picture may look exactly the same but the way one strokes the brush makes a difference on how the picture appears.

Maintain a good understanding of the location. This can enhance your story line, improve the reader's sense of memory and help them imagine better. Use every faculty of sense, so the audience can easily formulate the picture. Be specific on the time and place of the event. For instance, you can describe the snow-dusted pine cones, the fragrance of flowers and the evergreen branches to depict a cool summer rain or warm spring afternoon.

Do not undermine the effect of using high contrast. Whether the physical depiction, action and placement of your character or your word choice, describing two contrasting states can be appealing. This has a subconscious effect to the readers that would trigger them to reread the part that caught their attention.

Control how the story moves. When the story starts to move, things get even more exciting. A faster pace is effective to capture your audience. The faster things move, the more exciting it gets. However, you must slow down at some point. Keep the story as close to the real life as possible. Similar to real scenarios, anyone gets drawn out after a while of running.

Add a sense of mystery. Keep your readers guessing to get them engrossed with the book. They cannot help but flip one page after another trying to find answers to their own questions. This is an old trick that always works. This is an effective way to end a chapter or fuel plot lines.

Stories related to life, humanity, love, relationship and survival is always more captivating. This is because the readers can somewhat see themselves in the story. Use this to encourage your readers to introspect within themselves. Literature has always been a means of expression after all. It has been used to help one discover his psyche, philosophy and feelings.

Challenge the present belief system. Stories have always been used to present a different perspective of a known issue. Your readers are more likely to remember your work if it got them thinking deeply. This is an effective method to correct misconceptions, challenge wrong notions or just to encourage inquisitiveness.

Interject humor no matter how serious a story could get. The most captivating books in history has humors interposed in its pages. This is because the readers always look for something that could lighten things up. Humor can energize the readers, so they feel empowered. Effective use of comedy can bring relief to the readers amidst a rather serious storyline.
