Choosing A Fountain Pen For A Loved One

By Maicel Ryan

For an author, a fountain pen is metaphorical. No more than mere status symbols, fountain pens represent the craft of writing, the imagination and cleverness of the author, and the writer's power to change lives with words. While it is true that people rarely use pens nowadays with the prevalence of personal computers and tablet PCs, nothing is more romantic than using a fountain pen. So if you want to make a writer happy, giving them a fountain pen is your top bet.

If you desire to go the extra mile, how about giving your significant other a magnificent pen? A namiki pen, for example is a perfect gift option to give your loved one, given its exotic and painstaking manufacturing process. Creating the pen entails employing the centuries-old method of lacquering called Maki-e. Designs inspired by nature and Japanese culture are etched on the body of the pen, dusted with metallic powder then refined with an urushi coating. Urushi is extracted from Japanese laquer trees, giving the pen a shiny finish.

Now if you desire to gift something that's on the rare and expensive side, gift your loved one a Dunhill Namiki pen. A Dunhill Namiki pen is a limited edition pen produced by the Pilot company for Western company Dunhill. These pens are so rare that there are only 25 to 200 pens created for each model line. Be prepared to break your piggy bank though as a rare Dunhill Namiki pen retails for $50,000 a pop.

Namiki pens are costly because of the great tradition behind the brand. Some Namiki pens make use of silver, lacquer glazes, and 18-karat gold for lining and nibs. As for the design, the most well-liked and luxurious ones hail from the Emperor, Yukari and Yukari Royale collections.

Just a reminder though: you do not need to buy the most costly fountain pen to impress your companion. You could always purchase a Pilot, a Parker or Mont Blanc or whichever fits your budget. It is the thought that always matter and your partner certainly would value it that you remembered them for something they love.
