Tips On Children's Books About Disabilities

By Tammie Terry

Explaining to a young child why some people are just different from them can be quite stressful, especially if it is a loved one. There are numerous ways that one can teach them on how to deal with it. One of them is to write childrens books about disabilities. Find out how you can start doing it.

Challenges usually come in the form of innocent questions and most parents have a hard time with that. This is your job to help them with that dilemma. Come up with a decision on how old your target audience is going to be. Knowing that aspect will help you in coming up with ideas. Remember that stories for a three year old is going to be different from those for a seven year old.

Research is a big factor in this project. You do not want to make the mistake of giving wrong information to young children. Look around you and see if you can talk to individuals who are caring for a loved one with disability. Most of the time, it is better to ask from someone who has experience than just merely reading.

When you are still formulating ideas, make sure that you keep a back up of your thoughts by writing them down in a notebook. Bring one along when out on errands, walking your dog, or jogging in the park. You just never know when a brilliant idea can come up.

If you have trouble getting started, it will be best if you can talk to writers who already have published their books. They will be able to encourage you not to let things like a mental block from pursuing what you want. Engage in group activities with people who have the same interests.

The challenge usually comes in the form of marketing your book. If you do not have a big budget for traveling to different locations, you can use the resources that you have at hand. Create a social networking account and link your friends to it. In that way, they will be able to help you promote it.

Do not be afraid to make any changes in your work if there is a need to. Put yourself in other people's shoes and think about how attractive your book is. You may have to change the synopsis you have written or simply just the color. Always look at it objectively.

Those are just baby steps in how to start working on childrens books about disabilities. The secret to a successful project is to focus on your goals. If you do not have a clear cut vision of what you want and do not have the passion to get started, then it would be impossible to begin.
