Why Google Went After Forbes.com And The Truth About Link Buying

by Donald Adams

Even Forbes.com got a warning from Google on selling links from their website. Early this year, Google Webmaster sent Forbes.com a letter stating that it has found out that some if not all web pages on the website are using strategies which are not passing Google's quality standards further, and more particularly, Google directed Forbes.com to look for unnatural links on their site pointing to other websites that could be proposed to exploit PageRank. This has proven once again that buying links is not a secure SEO strategy.

Build Links, Not Pay Money For Links

As a website owner, you might speculate why link buying is so rampant. Well, it is true that link buying can skyrocket a site into the rankings in a very short time. But it is also true that link buying comes with disadvantages. The first danger is that of Google bringing down the site. The second gamble is that of the SEO vendor having domination of the website ranking. It has already happened that a certain customer, who ended the contract with the SEO vendor, lost all the links in only one day, after the SEO vendor stripped all the links from the site. The result is a drastic nose-dive in the rankings. This tactic is not moral at all.

What strategy can be utilized to produce quality links in a way that Google approves? The strategy is called content-based SEO. This means, a website owner generates high quality and informative content about the products and services he is offering. He then distributes this article to other websites. If these sites like this content, they can, at their own gumption, link back to the originator. This way, the website receives links in a natural and more permanent way.

So If A Site Really Likes Your Website, You Don't Have To Buy Links From Them

Do you know that even Oprah can link back to you if she so likes? Imagine the authority of a link from Oprah's website to your site? Google will certainly visit your website and rank you high as this is a clear sign of credibility and trust. Website owners benefit from enduring and permanent backlinking strategy if they do the right SEO. Stable links benefit the site even after a site owner has ceased actively participating in SEO.
