How To Improve Race Relations

By Virginia King

Race is a highly emotive issue around the world. It has broken relationships and created political divisions. Race Relations are likely to cause conflicts in work places and even make workers unable to cooperate. It is upon individuals, management and executives to put in place measures to enhance better relationships. Here are tips that can deliver excellent results in almost all situations.

Engage people in conversations on how races can co-exist without violence. Such conversations can decently happen in all corners of the world and create change. When people who are offended voice their concerns, offenders will better understand the situation. It gives them a sober moment to reflect on their actions and words in order to change. The aim of conversations is to raise awareness and forestall future offensive remarks or actions.

Stop jokes that are stereotypical. It must be made clear that there is nothing funny about racism. Racist comments must be viewed as putting people down. The people who are aware of such negative treatments must take the lead and stop those who are out to perpetuate the vice. This should be done openly, especially by not entertaining their derogative language and insinuations.

Be introspective at individual level. Encourage other people to discern their words and actions before they get to the other people. Reflect on the impact certain words and actions will have on other people. By being in the shoes of other people, you understand the best way to treat them and avoid being offensive. Stories of tragedies and disasters that came out of racist comments and actions should be shared to drive the point home.

Criticize the things you interact with by reading, viewing or listening to. Abandon shows that are racist or offensive. If a candidate or leader is racist in his or her principles, drop your support. Activities that are organized by racist persons or people with such an agenda should be avoided. The message that all races must co-exist must be sent clearly and loudly.

Build a diverse community around you. Workers and management at all levels should represent all races. The message sent in such a case is that race does not determine the ability of a person to deliver. A diverse work environment gives confidence to all races that their contributions are cherished and that anyone can work in any environment.

Take disciplinary measures against persons who perpetuate the vice of racism. It must be entered in your company policy that racism will not be entertained. Punitive measures should be put in place to deter people from perpetuating these vices and accord punishment where it is due. The rules must apply in all situations. The minority must not appear to oppress the majority like it happens when a lot of focus is on oppression of minority by majority.

Each situation should be treated individually. Be candid in your discussions about racism and handle issues when they are still fresh on the minds of people. The campaign to improve relationships between races must be spearheaded by management. Seek to be genuine and candid in your campaign and you will enjoy the fruits.
