The Best Fantasy Books This Year

By Gregory Murphy

The marketing gimmicks employed by authors and publishers are likely to mislead you into picking a book only to realize that it was a waste of time. The only way to know the best fantasy books is from an ardent reader who has devoured hundreds of them over years. Furthermore, there are many fantasy tastes depending on personal preferences. Here are some of the books that sit pretty at the top of the pile.

A Game of Thrones is the work of an author by the name George R Martin. This remains at the top any other title written in history. It has even been turned into a series. The writer is a master of weaving several stories that run concurrently. Martin has no mercy even for the main character. This does not affect the urge to flip through the pages. In reality, you can never predict the winner or loser in this novel.

The Name of the Wind is a masterpiece by Rothfuss Patrick. It narrates a tale of a legend that overshadows that of a woman and a young boy. Their paths cross in a way that changes their lives forever. The boy is out to challenge destiny. One aspect Patrick has mastered is precision and a perfect placement of every action and word. This is one novel that will be worth every minute.

The Blade Itself stars a reluctant hero, breathtaking action and black humor. It is a combination of ironies with a barbarian who is reluctant to kill, a dashing hero who fear is fighting and torturer with the most amazing heart. The plots are heavily twisted with the characters being unforgettable. It ranks high among the best titles you will ever encounter.

The man who takes the honors for The Axe and The Throne is M. Ireman D. He wrestles your mind from the first page and takes you to a new world that is impossible to leave. Every action in this novel is characterized by pain and darkness, yet the author injects relief through unexpected jubilation. With an unbelievable plot and most memorable characters, this is the best book you will every lay your hands on.

J. R. R Tolkien is a common name in the world of fantasies and has renewed his participation through the title Lord of the Ring. This is considered an epic of the century. His mastery of English language and its mythology, experience of WW I and creativity are all exemplified in this title. Though a movie has been made under the same title, you will feel as though you were conned at the theaters if you pick the book.

Post-modern fantasy cannot find any better actualization than what Grossman Lev has done in The Magicians. The title is an example of how to construct a story without repetition of cliches, obvious plots and overused characters. Heroes do not have to win all the time. In other instances, the heroes are plagued by depression or post-traumatic stress.

The list of excellent fantasy titles goes on to include the series called Disc World by Terry Pratchett, Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch and the works of Brandon Sanderson entitles The Way of Kings. Some of them are single titles while others have metamorphosed into series. Though others have been turned into movies, nothing beats flipping through the pages and working your imagination up.
