How To Get Them To Read Science Fiction Books For Teens

By Maryanne Goff

Reading is something that not enough children around the world get to do. Parents have a wide choice these days from thousands of titles and formats to read novels on. What about those who hate reading? How do you encourage them to read science fiction books for teens, or any book for that matter?

The reason it's key to get children to read is because the ones that do are normally more intelligent than ones that do not. And the good news is that it's not too late to boost their intellect and get them reading. Parents only need to give them a little nudge in the right direction and hopefully the child's curiosity will do the rest.

Kids that read from a young age rarely need encouragement to pick up a book. However, those that are reluctant to do so might well find themselves falling behind classmates, and they may not be as eloquent as their peers. These days, even the most rebellious teenager can start reading right away if encouraged. There are many devices on the market that act as readers, so there's no need for physical books. And finding these books is easy because teenagers are well catered for.

If you're attempting to get them reading science-fiction, try and start by watching things about space, or sci-fi programs. There's even a whole channel dedicated to it. They might be interested in aliens, in space travel and life on other planets. If this is too big a step try getting a graphic novel or perhaps a comic book based on one of the popular superheroes, as these deal with issues in many sci-fi novels.

Take them to the library and guide them to the teens section. If they're not a reader and are resistant to such efforts, then try to get them to choose just one novel, perhaps a sort one at first. They may even prefer a book of short stories. Another thing to try is search engines, as they have plenty of free stories around, and the child might have a lot of fun trawling through the various websites, looking at what takes their fancy.

For those that put more of a store on quality rather than quantity, then try the major book websites. Here, you'll often find niche lists, which are perfect for your child as teenagers have special sections. Check the best-seller lists too but be wary of self-published books as some are super quality and some have typos and grammatical errors as they haven't been edited properly.

One thing that you could do is stick to an author once your child has found one that they like. It's not easy to read a novel by a new author because you're not always sure you want to invest the time. So when you find one they like, look for other books by them.

Choosing science fiction books for teens is both easy and hard. With so much choice it's easy to get swamped by the sheer volume of titles. However, but being selective and sticking to known authors, you should cut through the maze and get your child reading.
