A Review On The History Of Alaska

By Marcy Becker

Alaska is rated as the biggest state in the USA. There is something special and interesting, although most of its inhabitants do not know about this or simply ignores it; The history of Alaska. There are major series of political, social and economical occurrences that leaves this state as a land with a history to behold.

The period from around 16,000 BC to 10,000 BC, the region saw its very first inhabitants; the Paleolithic families who moved in to the Western Side of the state from Bering Land Bridge. At the time, people living in this region comprised of American Indians and the Inuit tribes. On the onset of the 18th century, the state began to feel the presence of the Russian and the European Influence.

After establishing a settlement in the state, Russia saw it worth that the territory was the best region for fur trade and within no time, it had established fur business posts. A little while later, the land went through a bad season of over hunting and this brought a decline in the fur trade. Seeing the loss that came about, Russia decided to sell the state to the United States of America bringing an end to the Russian American Company.

The Russian fur traders had a potential chance to establish and enhance a close relationship with the locals in the region. This was not however the case within its every relationship aspect as it got into hostility and conflicts with the actual inhabitants of the region. In between trade and livelihood sprung hard feelings and disasters between the Aleut tribes and the Russian.

Other states like Spain and Britain had had interest in this land. For example, Spain went ahead and sent its expedition squad to explore the land and the troop has several stopping points in which they renamed a few things. In addition, the squad made another exploration journey to locate a Northwest Passage, a time in which they had a chance to learn about the Tlingit community and its way of life.

There is a propaganda that the Russian never got into sales liaison with the United States but instead rented the state out to US for a span of a hundred years. Others say that the deal between the US and Russia was because of bribery between the two parties. In real sense, Russia got into a trade agreement and sold the state to USA.

Russia therefore sold the state to the Americans for 7,200,000 US Dollars. They had to do this because of the low returns they got from their entire investment on fur business. Because of financial challenges and weaknesses, the Russians had no any other choice but to let go of the state to the United States of America.

Immediately after USA took over from Russia, the history of Alaska shows that they named it the Department of Alaska. Mid 1912, they changed it to District of Alaska. In the same year, the state acquired full territorial status.
