JK Rowling really seems to understand what motivates humans. She weaves tales that delight people of all ages. She also has a gift of writing books with strong female characters, and writing them believably. Three wonderful examples of this are Hermione Granger, Luna Lovegood and Professor McGonagall.

On the outside, these women are not particularly tough in stature. Their unique iron comes from inside. It is shown through their integrity, unwavering beliefs and their brilliance. They all have their own special personalities but share many like traits.

Harry, the main character's best friend is Hermione Granger. She's courageous, wise and not afraid to speak her own truth. She is one of the most skilled and intelligent of the books people. She is loyal, and acts when she believes in the cause. Any logic or book knowledge needed along the way comes from this person.

Although a minor player who enters in book five of the series, Luna Lovegood, has a quite strength and wisdom. It is through her friendship to Harry that helps him to understand how Voldemort is thinking when he attempts to isolate him from his friends. She is often is a calm voice in chaos and does not let other's dictate how she reacts to situations.

Professor McGonagall is a wise character, and is the headmaster's right hand. She speaks her mind, does her job well and yet has compassion too. She's also someone who is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in, and directs the teachers in what to do in the final battle.

These three women know who they are. They are unwavering, brilliant and wise. They refuse to sit back and do nothing when their world is in peril. Harry is lucky to be in books with strong female characters on his side.
