Few Examples Of Intelligent Sea Life Which Have Been Observed

By George Hall

Humans are considered to be the most intelligent among the animals of the whole world due to them possessing different abilities. They are capable in doing mental activities which other creatures could not though researchers believe there are some that have more intelligence compared to what was believed initially. These are observed usually on the closest cousins that humans have which are the apes.

This information is based on what researchers found in their DNA being similar with humans and their behavior have similarities with people too. Although land animals are not the only ones with this intelligence because there are also intelligent sea life being observed by scientists. Knowing the extent of their capabilities is harder because of their underwater habitat that individuals cannot always visit.

Continuous development for modern technology enables the observation of these sea creatures which were impossible before. They could set some cameras and surveillance devices up to help record the daily habits, reactions and activities of creatures like these. Others are capable even of using tools like those Tusk fishes using rocks in cracking the shell open.

Octopus is another examples which is able to mimic others, find its way at a maze, spread cultural information and solve advance problems. Other types also pick coconut halves that are discarded by villagers, carry them and hide underneath while waiting for the prey. Two shells typically are used in letting them see between its small opening through.

Dolphins are another sea creatures considered to have intelligence and are known to wear sponges on their nose when catching fishes in rocks. Doing this helps protect their nose against the rocks when searching and chasing their prey in that environment. Some captive dolphins were tested by painting marks somewhere they cannot see and the animals tried to see the markings in the mirror just like humans do.

Researchers have documented recently also some dolphins helping a fishing expedition happening in a certain place during fall seasons. They heard the schools of fish to the local fishermen who had their nets wading in water and they slap the water to signal the fishermen that fishes are coming. These actions described as an advanced social learning.

Intelligence of killer whales manifest by cooperating to get their prey like the sleeping seal at a floating ice. Then the first whale who has seen it calls the others and they form a line facing away with their tails to the seal then create waves by beating their tails. These waves would wash the floating ice over and will send the seal to the water where they can kill it.

Whales are also known now for their elaborate communication and cultural exchange form aside from their intelligence. Male Humpback whales compose each year new mating songs with the popular ones gradually spreading to other parts. This cultural exchange involving the songs tend to happen within the ten years of observation period.

Knowing other creatures are intelligent too is fascinating specially while observing them do these. This information may help people understand and care for them better. Preserve their environment to preserve them as well.
