Think Homeschooling Is Out Of Your Reach? Think Again!

By Dudley Johansen

Don't restrict yourself to textbooks! Your child should learn to read all sorts of things, from comic books to the newspaper. Current events can open up amazing discussions, so having them read timely articles is an exceptional way to learn. You'll also be teaching them analytic skills which will last a lifetime.

Designate housework to the kids or hire outside help. It is going to be difficult for you to take care of everything on your own. Shopping, cooking, cleaning, caring for the kids and homeschooling will wipe you out quickly. Welcome help when you can get it and do not feel badly about it.

Instead of diving in to homeschooling headfirst, do your child a favor by attending a few conferences and workshops beforehand. It's easy to become overwhelmed by everything you need to take care of as a teacher. Seminars and classes offer hands-on guidance and inspiration for nearly every aspect of the homeschooling experience. If you're already involved in homeschooling, it never hurts to attend one of these events as continuing education.

When teaching your children, provide them with hands-on lessons. For example, if they're learning about a foreign culture, plan to create recipes from that region. For example, when learning about Stalin they could cook perogies and cabbage rolls. If learning about World War II, you can have them cook schnitzel, pasta and sushi as they go through the various Axis countries in their learning. When one learns with all of their senses active, they will absorb more information.\

If you are considering homeschooling your child be sure you do your research. There are plenty of resources available to you online to help you decide if this is really the right choice for your family. No matter how much you may like the idea, you need to be sure you have the time, energy, financial resources to give your children a great education.

Learn when to give in. If you are trying to teach your child in one way and it is not working, do not continue to push. Find an alternative method of teaching that subject to them. You can use movies, online apps or even online tutors to get through. Pushing them to learn in ways that is not easy for them will only frustrate the both of you.

Put your reasoning on paper. You know why you want to homeschool your children but until you put it in writing, it might not completely click for you or your spouse. Know what you hope to accomplish, so you can answer any questions that others may have about why you have not put your children in public school. It will make things easier for you.
