The Need to Ask Questions

By Shannon L Smith

Some parents encourage their children to ask questions, whereas others discourage this habit. People grow up depending on this initiation by their parents. Some people will feel shy of asking questions even when they need to, whereas other will ask them straight. Parents should never discourage the natural curiosity of a child. Everyone wants to know everything they can learn about things that interest them. This habit has to be encouraged by parents. If you discourage a child from asking questions, he or she will turn to someone else to get the answers. This can adversely affect the parent-child relationship.

Right from early childhood, we have a natural urge to increase our knowledge, so we seek answers to questions that cross our mind. A young child might want to know why does a butterfly fly and why a ladybug does not. Or, why do we have to drink milk? Or, where do babies come from?

If we cannot find a satisfactory answer to a question that's teasing our mind, we should ask questions from people who can give us an answer. We study to seek answers to questions that will be asked in an exam. We ask questions to find out more about a place, an event, or to learn about people and animals. Asking questions should come naturally to us and we should not shy away from asking questions. Asking questions also helps in making important decisions about our lives. In certain situations, we even question ourselves. After all, if we didn't, how would we get the answers?

We ask questions to seek answers and we base decisions on the answers that we get. We may make the right or the wrong decision based on the answers, but we learn. We can only increase our knowledge by asking questions. Like this, we can avoid making costly mistakes.

Not too far back, it was parents, teachers, peers and the local library that we depended on to seek answers to our questions. But now, the internet has expanded our horizons and now asking a question without feeling shy about it has become quite common. Today, there are thousands of answering sites that encourage people to reply to asked questions. We may or may not get the right answer, but the help is always there.

Asking the right question and getting the correct answer helps us to learn. It not only increases our knowledge but makes us take better decisions. Remember decisions are generally based on the amount of information we have, and the more information we have, the better qualified will be our decision. Asking questions is one of the oldest and best ways of learning. That's why good teachers encourage their students to ask questions and parents also encourage the same habit. Asking questions and getting suitable replies makes the relationship stronger and better.
