Healing And Growing With Self Help Literature

By Alison Wilcox

Everyone has limitations and inadequacies they wish to overcome from losing weight, mending a rocky relationship, getting over a tragic event, developing self-awareness and esteem to finding happiness and contentment. Self help literature is an ideal way to overcome these mountains privately and at your own pace.

Counselors are equipped to win over the trust of their patients so they can let them into their inner world for them to get the help they need. There are those who will not or cannot lay themselves bare even before a professional counselor. Some say that they are no different even after long term therapy. Also, there is not really a way to vet counselors in terms of the patients they have been able to cure.

Book reviews, on the other hand, will give you a clue. Best sellers that sell millions of copies must mean that there is something helpful and valuable over there. Also, with books, you can go over something again and again and keep getting new light bulb, aha moments every time.

Such books are a section of the larger self-help industry that is worth over 10 billion dollars in the US. The industry includes infomercials, CDs, holistic centers, retreats and seminars.

Aside from book reviews, the value of inspirational books can be gauged from the author. Those that are most helpful are those penned by licensed medical professionals and clergy. Such information can be found on the book with usually carries an author bio and also on the websites of the author and publisher. It is in fact important to carry out such checks to be sure that you are picking a book that addresses the challenges you want to overcome.

No form of art lacks critics and the inspirational books do have their fair share of them. Their opinion is that the books do leave readers a sense of inspiration and faith which does get them off the edge if they were on the verge of taking desperate measures. Their point of criticism is that no significant improvement in their lives past this. Readers remain hopeful but they do not work through their issues to overcome them completely.

There is one constant whether one opts to work with a counselor or pick up a self-help book. One has to be willing to do the work of taking the advice given and applying it into their lives. Otherwise, no change will ever be seen. The best books will usually have practical activities for a reader to carry out in every section or chapter. Keeping a journal is also a good way to keep track of your progress.

Turning to self help literature is like turning to a confidant who understands what you are struggling through and who is there to see you through it. You can count on this friend keeping your secrets and you can go over and ask them the same question over and over again without their getting tired of it. There are there quietly cheering and urging you on to break negative ties and arrive at love, appreciation, esteem and awareness of yourself and those around you.
